Assessing Global Unemployment and Hiring Trends Amid COVID-19

As Covid-19 was declared as a pandemic, there was a complete lockdown announced in almost all the countries worldwide. Closure of non-essential businesses in the effort to stop the spread of Coronavirus had an unprecedented impact on the jobs and economy of the affected countries. Hundreds of millions of jobs were put on hold in the countries that were under full or partial lockdown measures after being hit by the pandemic.

The initial unemployment claims show that the earliest wave of job losses took place in mid-March which hit the food, entertainment, and accommodation industries. As claimed by the International Labour Organization (ILO), “the COVID-19 pandemic drastically increased global unemployment, leaving more than 25 million people out of work and slashing incomes. It is not only a global health crisis but also a major labor market and economic crisis that is having a huge impact on people.”.

Another report by ILO says that more than one in six young people have stopped working since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic while those who remain employed have seen their working hours cut by 23 percent. Comparatively the pandemic affected the economy much more than the health of people all around the globe.

Companies that Laid Off its Employees or Enforced a Pay Cut

Despite the government’s appeal to the companies to not let go of their employees, a number of companies laid off their employees during the pandemic. Let’s have a look at well-known companies who downsized their workforce to deal with the reduction in revenue due to the Pandemic.

Apart from these reputed names, there were many more that instead of laying off the employees announced pay cuts to deal with the situation.

  • Reliance Industries announced pay cuts of up to 50% for the employees, whereas, the Chairperson Mukesh Ambani let go of his salary for the entire year.
  • Oyo Rooms cut the salary of its employees by 25% for four months and also furloughed many of its employees.
  • The CEO of Indian Express called the current situation absolutely unprecedented and asked its employees to take a temporary salary cut.

Reasons for Unemployment During Covid-19

The Covid-19 pandemic impacted several businesses across the globe regardless of the size of business. Whether the business is established or just a startup, they were forced to reconsider their operational strategies. It became a challenge to keep their financial wheels turning during the difficult times due to less revenue churn and uncertainty in the global financial environment. Below listed are some of the reasons for companies laying off employees during the Covid-19 outbreak:

  • Missing Plan of Action: Most of the companies that laid off their employees had one thing missing in common – a future proof plan of action. Having a well-prepared plan of action in place does well in the long run for businesses to deal with such a crisis. The plan can be created in 3-18 months depending upon the business and time to be taken by the crisis to return back to normal.
  • No Track of Expenses: It is important for businesses to keep track of expenses; both fixed and variable during these times. It enables them to get a clear picture of where the business stands and the strategies that are required at that point of time. A proper track of expense will help businesses to be prepared for these unprecedented times.
  • Lack of  Revised Business Model: Businesses need to assess their business model from time to time to evaluate their demand in the market and supply accordingly. Checking it regularly will help in avoiding any financial crisis in the present as well as the future.

Running a business during the period of a pandemic is a tough task and apart from all the above pointers, businesses require to stand united, maintain trust with customers and employees, and help one another in any way they can.

Companies That are Still Hiring

Although the Coronavirus pandemic completely changed the job market and companies in some sectors, such as hospitality, tourism, and leisure, were not hiring, whereas, there were still some industries like logistics, healthcare, medicine, and some online retailers that were booming and extensively hiring to accommodate the increased demand for their services/products. Below listed are some of the companies that were mass hiring amid the pandemic.

  • Instacart hired 300,000 employees
  • Amazon hired 175,000 employees
  • Walmart hired 150,000 employees
  • CVS Health hired 50,000 employees
  • Dollar General hired 50,000 employees

What are These Businesses Doing Differently?

Businesses that were least or not impacted by this wave of recession took a second look at how to position themselves in the market. Also, they took the time to improve their ongoing operations ensuring the safety of employees, customers, or anyone who would come in contact with their product/services. They understood the need to invest in new technologies and adapted to the changing climate as customers’ purchasing habits go out of the window in these uncertain times.

These companies proved that slowing down their operations cannot be an option. Businesses need to keep moving forward and invest in their customers and technology. It is imperative to understand the environment and adapt to it which enables us to not only survive through such pandemic but also to get ahead of the competition.

While talking about moving forward and adapting to the current environment, a name that comes to mind is AblySoft. India’s Journey to Complete Independence – In-Dependence with Equality and Non-discrimination

Freedom was not easy for India, but the determination to gain independence in the freedom fighters and political leaders led us to achieve complete Independence. Finally, on August 15, 1947 the legislative powers were granted to the Indian constituent assembly. The first version of Independence was when the colonists left India. Our country became independent 73 years ago but with a shattered economy and widespread illiteracy.

Our nation has changed tremendously since independence and has come a long way. India has developed economically, politically, liberally, and in every sector. Despite the development, India still had to fight some social evils like gender inequality, casteism, economic inequality, poverty and many more.

For the current generation, the second version (freedom 2.0) of independence was achieved when we got independence with equality and non-discrimination. Here is information on recent developments in India towards freedom 2.0.

Equality to Women – In 2006, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 was passed. This gave women equal rights to participate fully in areas such as education, sports, politics, media, art and culture, service sectors, and science, etc.

Equality to LGBTQ+ – In 2018, section 377 was abolished. This section liberates equal rights to the LGBTQ+ community. Indians pledged to provide equal rights to people irrespective of their caste, creed, religion and sexual preference.

Equality to Religion – A Bill against triple talaq was passed in 2019. This bill makes instant triple talaq illegal and void giving Muslim women- living in India, equal rights. This also provides all religions in India with equal rights and secularism.

India continues its fight against social stigmas and eradicated the issues holding our society from complete freedom. At AblySoft, we celebrate freedom 2.0 with our team. At AblySoft, we believe in giving liberty to our employees to be able to express themselves freely. We asked our team members – “what is the true meaning of freedom for them?” below are the answers we got.

World Health Day – A Reminder To Cast Off Our Worries Aside

The World Health Day is just around the corner and it’ll again serve as a great opportunity for people to spare a thought or two about their well-being. It turns out, the boundaries are blurring between work and personal life. We thought technology would save us time but instead, we’ve found more ways to keep ourselves busy in that ‘saved time’. It seems the proverbial donkey’s title is more applicable to the modern man whose burden to keep all things balanced can send him crashing down any moment.

In the hustle and bustle of everyday work life, we often forget our mind can only process so many things at a time. Work it beyond its capacity and the breakdown is sure to happen. Surprisingly many of us are flirting with those dangerous extremes on a daily basis.

No wonder, stress is the most hackneyed term among working professionals. A Six letters word that spells big trouble for its victims. Stress can bring our concentration levels down, drain all our energy, make us sad, fatigued and a bad company to anyone. Over time, stress can crawl its way to some chronic ailments, interfering with our immune system and wreaking havoc inside the body. That’s a terrible prospect and one, no doubt, all of us would prefer to stay clear of.

That brings us to the remedial measures that one needs to adapt to attain peace of mind and that much-vaunted equanimity. Since the employee-employer relations is a symbiotic one, it makes sense that companies should prioritize employee’s mental and physical well-being to get the best out of them. Following are some of the ways in which employers can discharge their share of responsibility towards employees.

Access To Exercise

Research has proven that exercise is the body’s natural stress-reliever. As such, 30 minutes of exercise is recommended on a daily basis for healthy living. It’s found that employees who eat healthily and exercise regularly seldom get sick. A healthy employee will be availing less sick leaves and eventually contribute to greater productivity. If your office building offers gym facility, then encourage your employees to take advantage of it in their free time. If not, then you might consider offering a session of Yoga or dance on a weekly basis.

Access To Exercise

Community Engagement Activities

Volunteering or any other social work that throws us in the midst of people we share this world with is a spiritual exercise in its own right. As such, companies can look for ways to encourage community engagement activities among their staff. A reasonable option is to offer specific hours of paid volunteering time to the employees. It could range from offering education kit to students in a community-run school to providing meals to an impoverished section of society on a given day.

Community Engagement Activities

Flexible Breaks

This is something we have tried with great success at Ablysoft. Throughout the day, offer employees some free time to relax, take a walk, chit-chat with colleagues or grab some snack. Again, it’s scientifically proven that human-mind can concentrate on a given activity for 90-120 minutes at best. After that, it needs a breather to process everything fed to it.

Flexible Breaks

Medical/Healthcare Benefits

Health concerns remain the biggest worry not least in the middle-aged and aging staff. Diseases don’t just affect people physically, they silently torment their mental peace in the process. The situation becomes even more compounded when a person has to constantly worry about their healthcare expenses. Companies at the very least should offer medical/accidental insurance to their staff to alleviate their healthcare anxieties. Where staff is already insured, certain wellness, preventive or self-care benefits, targeted at their individual needs could be a decent gesture.

Medical/Healthcare Benefits

Final Thoughts

We can definitely reiterate the last year’s slogan – ‘Health for All’ which emphasizes the notion of Universal health coverage; a mission where quality healthcare is set as a cornerstone to make people free of any physical/mental stress and improve their economic status in life.

Greatest Inventions of 21st Century: Tech Timeline 2001 – 2018

We are about to enter Two Thousand Nineteen, the last teenage year of this millennium. Team AblySoft decided to drive down the memory lane and see what all technological trends the world witnessed from the dawn of Y2K. We’ll get done with the first one right here because, well, it wasn’t’ all hunky dory in the beginning. Dotcom crash plagued the internet. Companies were going bust, companies telling about these crashes crashed; it was complete chaos.

But it was not all bad, for 2001 was about to witness something remarkable. Richard Stallman conceptualized an online encyclopedia. The idea was launched by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, it was named Wikipedia, and today, this is the largest online encyclopedia known to man.

This happened 17 years ago, and as the years passed, we came across many technological marvels that shaped our lives for better. Let’s take a look at the years that were and things that happened:

2001: World’s First iPod

2001 was an era when dotcom bubble burst and Wikipedia were the talk of the town, a time when Apple was also struggling hard. This was also the time when Steve Jobs introduced the world to a new kind of music technology. The CD killer wasn’t the first digital music player, but it was the first kind to work in tandem with anti-piracy movement.

2002: Bluetooth Headset and Lots of Confusion

The awake of 2002 brought us something remarkable. The Bluetooth that we used to transfer images among friends was now used to talk on the phone. And boy did it lead to awkward conversations.

Stranger: Hello

Me: Hey, how are you?

Stranger: Excuse me?

Me: *practicing my “You Talking to Me?” in the perfect De Niro style*

*Stranger removes Bluetooth earpiece*

Me: Umm, nevermind.

2003: Camera Phones Became a Fad

Mobile phones just got introduced to a camera. A 0.2 megapixel camera was attached to some phones, and there was no flash in the beginning either.  The first mobile phone with a camera that we saw was the Nokia 6600.

2004: Era of Video Breakthroughs

2004 was the year when HDTV came into existence. Utterly expensive, but the technology set roots for higher picture quality. But it wasn’t just 1080P that made the difference…

We also saw Skype, a video calling technology that completely transformed the way we would talk to our friends.

2005: Google Maps

The Maps that we follow with unflinching reliability wasn’t the same when it was launched in 2005. It had many glitches, but that’s how many great things start. Things keep getting refined and improved, and now we have Street View and Satellite view for a more realistic experience.

2006: The Dawn of Online Streaming

Before Netflix, there was Hulu. Launched on October 29th, we got the world’s first online streaming service. Available only in US, US territories and Japan, Hulu primarily focused on TV series and stream their current and past episodes.

2007: The First iPhone

What started as a side project named Project Purple 2 in 2005 soon turned out a trendsetter. iPhone, Apple’s all touch screen smartphone paved the path for all the smartphones we see today. 11 years down the line, we only grew fonder of the iPhone with each new model.

2008: HP 2710p Tablet Computer

Weighing a mere 3.6 lbs. and just 1.11 inches in thickness, the Compaq 2710 tablet computer by HP became an instant hit. No other notebook company came close to this for years.

2009: Square Reader

A small credit card reader with a 3.5 mm jack, Square became an instant success among small and local business owners. This technological marvel is the brainchild of Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter.

2010: The First iPad

Bigger than a mobile phone but smaller than a PC, iPad allowed users to do all the major tasks on the go. From creating an email to creating designs, iPad took portability and functionality to a whole new level.

2011: The First Chromebook

Chrome transformed from a web-browser to a Linux based operating system. With most of the key applications and documents stored in the cloud, Chromebooks are specifically designed to be the most efficient when connected to the Internet.

2012: Wi-Fi Protocol 802.11ac

Because we always need more speed. Our internet should be faster because no speed is fast enough. The new Wi-Fi protocol had broader coverage area and offered faster speeds.

2013: Hyperloop

Proposed by Elon Musk, Hyperloop is a pneumatic tube transport concept that is believed to achieve travel speeds of 1200 kmph.

2014: Apple Watch

How do you take something amazing and make it even better, cooler and awesome? Apple had the answer. As a matter of fact, Apple always has the answer. Not just a smart watch, Apple Watch is a revolution that swept the mainstream with a tap on the dial.

2015: Mart McFly Everybody

And you just visualized Michael J. Fox riding his hoverboard, didn’t you? Hendo created the real version of the hoverboard. And although you can only ride it for 10 minutes, we do know hoverboards are possible.

2016: Blockchain

The term became popular because BitCoin works on this. Better transactions and more security, blockchain isn’t chained to cryptocurrency anymore. The technology is implemented in the insurance and healthcare industries too.

2017: Intelligent Assistance

It all started with Siri, then came Cortana, and now, Alexa is playing songs for us. Voice recognition has evolved to the extent that smart homes will soon be completely automated homes. Looks like Jetsons is about to get really real.

2018: Sport Tech

Smart gold clubs are helping a golfer improve their swing, AI helps drones maneuver better in races, and it’s just a matter of time when technology will enhance other sports in one way or the other.

Conclusion

Isn’t it wonderful how each year brought us something amazing? Wait, it we brought those changes, we are the amazing thing, right? We thought of new things and made something memorable every year, sometimes more than one great breakthrough in a year. That’s how we all should be. The millennium is about to enter its last teen year, and we believe it’s high time we raise it the right way. May the coming years be more amazing.

Team AblySoft Visits Mashobra, the Hidden Quaint Town of Shimla

Amidst the rising humidity and rising temperature in Chandigarh Tricity, Team AblySoft figured it was the right time to go for the much-needed vacation to a place away from city life. After scrolling through numerous tabs on Chrome, Mashobra was chosen as our weekend retreat.

For the uninitiated, Mashobra is a small town about 15kms from Shimla. Calm, serene, picturesque, all the adjectives that a bibliophile could muster up for a beautiful hill station can be used for this peaceful town.

We greeted the quiet yet warm Friday morning of September 14th in front of our Bestech Square branch. After a headcount, we boarded the bus and thus our 5 and a half hour long journey started.

Couple of washroom stops and a breakfast break later, we reached our drop-off point in Mashobra from where we trekked to Mashobra Greens, our campsite.

Once the busy town was left behind in the woods, we were welcomed by tall deodars and a road absolutely less traveled. What we didn’t know was that piping hot tea and crunchy snacks were also waiting for us, courtesy Mashobra Greens.

One of the Best Campsites and Bamboo Cottages Ever!

After a couple of hours’ worth of rest, it was time for fun to unfold as the Sun bid farewell. A bonfire party lit up the night sky.

Karam Decided to Warm Up Before Getting Into The Party Mode

Saturday early morning woke us up with cold weather, colder breeze and a comforting cup of hot tea. Once we were done getting ready and having our breakfast, it was time for us to trek down the woods to the first activity spot: a waterfall where a zipline was patiently waiting for us.

These Daring Divas Left No Adventure Untouched

Munish AKA MR. Been There Done That

The same spot also tested our mettle for heights and how we would tame it. Rappelling isn’t too difficult; you just need to keep your knees straight, your feet planted and your weight on the harness.

A waterfall was gushing along the rappelling spot. Some decided to stay there before going back. But we were many, so by the time all were done rappelling, it was time for lunch.

Tiring activities followed by a hearty meal do call for a nap, but not for everyone. Some strolled and basked in the sun and some found great company in booze.

Saturday evening meant two more activities: Valley Crossing and Burma Bridge. After making our arms and shoulders go through a grueling workout on former and maintaining balance on the latter, the sundown called for another bonfire. The last bonfire of this trip!

Kavya Isn’t Introspecting Here, She’s Just Waiting for Her Song

Sunday morning meant return to the good old city life. We were all packing our bags, but I guess none of us wanted to. We trekked back to the drop off point, patiently waiting for our bags (some chose to hitch a ride in the luggage carrier, and thus, the car had to make a second round for our bags).

You Can Say The Trip is Over, But This Is From Where The Memories Begin

The 3-day 2-night experience in the woods, way away from honking horns and bustling roads is worth the journey. Team AblySoft is always up for an adventure, let’s see where the roads takes us the next time. Ciao!

Website Design and Development Trends For Your Online Business

Online businesses can do well only by providing their audience with the best user experience. Emerging trends keep changing in terms of functionality, sustainability, web design, and development. These trends guide us to make the best possible changes and discard anything unsuitable.

Below we have mentioned some web development and design trends that will strongly impact online businesses globally.

1. Re-engineered Programming

Technology is evolving in tandem with the need of the hour. Functional programming has been around for quite some time now, but the latest updates in JavaScript like ES6 and ES7 has brought more benefits. These updates allow programmers to simplify codes using arrow functions and object spreading makes it effortless to fabricate new elements from existing values. Async/Await now makes call functions more comprehensive in functional programming.

2.  Bold is Better

Speaking from website design’s perspective, bold color scheme have been used increasingly. Designers now prefer more vibrant and bright colors while designing a website for a specific niche. A perfect combination of bright colors is used in the background as well as the text of the website.

3. Innovative backgrounds and shapes

Most websites and apps now boast aggressive and innovative designs. Web designers now use backgrounds with amoeboid blobs of bold colors, minimalistic shapes, dramatic diagonals, straight lines and other spherical shapes.

4. Progressive web apps

PWAs have a UX similar to native apps and give users a familiar look, feel and functionality. The interesting part is that they run on the browser, and don’t need to be installed on the device.

5. AI and Chatbots

AI has been around from last year but now business can put it into action with the help of conversational interface and Voice assistance. Technology has incorporated these trends to provide the internet users with a seamless experience.

With the enhancement of innovation in every field of technology, chatbots are getting smarter and more efficient.

6. Avant-Garde Typography

Typography has always been an attractive tool for catching the attention of the users. Web designers are now moving ahead and exploring new and innovative typography. Some synchronization between fonts helps in providing the dynamic user experience.

7.  Safer and More Secure Websites

Better security with SSL (secure socket layer) allows your website to establish an encrypted connection between the server and the browser. Business are using SSL certificate more now as they want to protect sensitive data, eliminate the risk of cyber-attacks, phishing and also provides better and more efficient SEO.

8. More Visual Content

If a good picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a thousand such pictures. Photos and videos have more impact on a visitor’s attention as compared to written content. Make sure your audiovisual content is authentic and conveys a story or something of value to the customer. Videos also have advantages over GIF’s and can be incorporated seamlessly into website’s base design.

9. Blockchain technology

Blockchain technology allows data to be shared or distributed but prohibits it from being copied. Blockchains keep all transaction parties in the loop; enable supply chain auditing, smart contracts, and failure-free decentralized storage for files. It also paves the path for crowd funding and peer-to-peer commerce.

10. Single page website

Many businesses are letting go of their traditional homepages and navigations and are exploring new dynamics in the web development industry. Development is primarily focusing on voice and touch functionality. Business can now look forward to single page website which offers information seamlessly, without complex navigation and page shifting.

11. Floating navigation menu

The latest and effective trends for web designer are the floating navigation menu. Designers nowadays detaching the navigation bar visually from other elements and placing it below the browser’s chrome. The menu thus floats like a constant element on all web pages making it a universal object on your website.

12. Storytelling

Designers and product development team will understand that storytelling has become an important part of web development. Build your product and your website around a storyline it makes it more human and adds a touch of realism. There is the rise in designers using animation as their favorite tool for storytelling.

13. Real-Time Support

This is the best time for web developer to deploy chatbots for interactive and smarter work. Chatbots can answer customer’s queries, find products and even help in payment. Utilize the power of Chatbots for your benefits, as they help in curbing the investment needed in deploying human resources.

Conclusion

After few years the web design and development trends change, these trends will influence the online business world. Now is the time to act fast and see where the website stands in the market. Some time ago, these above-mentioned trends were nowhere around and marketers could not have thought a bot will do all the talking with the customer.

Fulfilling Day, And A Fun-filled Evening

Well!

Women’s day is a special occasion every year at AblySoft as we believe in and support women power. This year too we added few more women’s day memories and took some time out to ask our own women what they feel about the day dedicated to them. Here are a few inferences drawn from those conversations.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day is an occasion to mark the strength of womanhood. We all come together to honor the achievements and advancements women have achieved in all spheres of life. Women have worked extremely hard for gender equality, progress, development, politics and education; and this day just celebrates the same.

Are there any challenges and privileges that you stereotypically face because you are a woman?

The women of India do face various challenges and even privileges every given day. We have definitely come a long way from female feticide but physical violence and harassment now top the list. Women are now increasingly exploring all avenues and coming to the forefront. No gender discrimination at work, separate queues and a ladies night every now and then are a few things women out here look forward to.

If you could put on a parade for International Women’s Day, which woman would you put on the lead and why?

Well, has to be Oprah. She is wise and shows strength, perseverance, beauty, humility and elegance with utmost grace. She has used her fame with the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show’ to transform lives and for many other humanitarian causes. Not only this, but she encourages all women to come forward to make a change in the future. Ellen DeGeneres, Frida Kahlo, Angela Merkel, Michelle Obama and Virginia Woolf were some other choices that would lead the Woman’s Day parade.

AblySoft celebrates its female employees every year with great enthusiasm. We are proud to have some great ladies onboard our teams! This year our staff celebrated the international IWD theme #PressforProgress and we pressed our female employees to take some time off to dress in their best gear and enjoy a surprise party.

Do check out the video below to catch a glimpse of our Women’s Day happiness and few conversations we had with our ladies.

Dedicated to the female power of AblySoft and all the women out there.

Happy Women’s Day!

Essential Elements of Work-Life Balance

Apart from the current economic and political agendas, the most common topic around any coffee machine or washroom break is the work-life balance. But why is it one of the hottest topics of discussion since decades? And why has it become even more so important in present times?

The answer lies right in front of you.

The computer screen your employees are glued to is the reason why they just can’t seem to enjoy work or life at all. Multiple tabs, an overwhelming amount of data waiting to be processed, tasks to be assigned, completed and delivered; the list goes on.

Work-life imbalance often leads to stress, reduced productivity and absenteeism. So now the question comes, how to ensure a good work-life balance to keep employees inspired, rejuvenated and more productive? Here are some ideas, read along…

Results over Hours

Many companies encourage productivity in a way that makes the work environment enjoyable and welcoming. Productivity and results must be given precedence over the time window.

Offices with 8-8:30 hours of productive time have better productivity in comparison to workplaces where employees work for 9 hours or more. Extended working hours or expecting employees to work after office hours eventually leads to burnout.

In simple words: if an employee completes an assigned task in 7 hours, appreciate them for their performance and then give them more work to do. But don’t forget to give them a much-deserved break.

Speaking of breaks…

A Breather Once in a While Doesn’t Hurt

Prolonged sitting not only affects posture and spinal column, it also leads to feeling tired and sleepy. Taking a short breather once in a while helps in keeping stress at bay and improving productivity.

Engage Employees In Recreational Activities

Engage employees in group activities on a routine basis. Including dance classes, yoga sessions and other such activities in office have multiple benefits.
